Recent advancements in deepfake technology, exemplified by Microsoft’s latest generative AI system, are raising profound concerns about the authenticity of digital content. With the ability to generate convincing videos from a single image and audio clip, these sophisticated tools are blurring the line between reality and fabrication.

What is Microsoft Working on?

Microsoft’s VASA system, short for ‘visual affective skill,’ introduces a new frontier in digital manipulation, allowing users to create realistic videos from images of a person, complete with tailored emotions and expressions. With its capability to handle diverse inputs, it produces outputs characterized by precise lip synchronization and fluid motions.

While the technology promises immersive experiences in use cases, such as gaming, it also poses significant risks in the hands of malicious actors. AI deepfakes are already setting a dangerous precedent, with growing instances of scammers impersonating influential people and revenge deepfake nudes.

Are We Prepared for Deepfakes?

A study conducted by iProov showed that a large portion of those surveyed couldn’t tell if a video was a deepfake or if it featured a real human. Internationally, 71% of participants indicate unfamiliarity with the term “deepfake.” Slightly less than a third of worldwide consumers claim awareness of deepfake technology. Additionally, 43% confess uncertainty about distinguishing between authentic videos and deepfakes.
