"There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things."

"I dare say you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

Lewis Carroll

Derrill Bazzy

While he was an emergency aid worker, Derrill documented the life of Guatemalans surviving a 36-year civil war -- which ended last December and left more than 100,000 dead.

Derrill Bazzy's photographs are memories -- stories wrapped in sound, smell, fear.

His photography is a reflection of the trust and friendship he developed with the communities in which he worked. Derrill was privy to the quiet, unreserved, yet cautious moments of a population in resistance.

An American living in Aquinnah, Massachusetts, Derrill, a builder, now works in his spare time to support indigenous organizations in Guatemala.
